UMPIRE Simon Meredith has capped his recovery from a brain injury mid-season to be selected among the umpires to officiate in the first week of the finals.

The AFL announced on Tuesday the umpires who have been selected for the finals series, with Meredith picked for the qualifying final clash between the Sydney Swans and Fremantle.

Earlier this year Meredith was rushed to hospital after a game and diagnosed with bleeding on his brain.

"It is an incredible comeback," umpires coach Hayden Kennedy told AFL.com.au's Whistle Blowers.

"We saw him at the weekend and he was as good as he was prior to the illness, so we're rapt."

Ray Chamberlain will join Mathew Nicholls and Troy Pannell to umpire in Friday night's qualifying final between Hawthorn and Geelong.

And the umpiring community will welcome a finals debutant, after naming Andrew Mitchell for Port Adelaide's elimination final battle with Richmond.

"He was one of a number of guys vying for the last spot. He's had a terrific last half of the season," Kennedy said.
