GOLD Coast captain Gary Ablett has backed coach Guy McKenna to lead the club in 2015, saying he would be "surprised" if McKenna was not there next season.

The Suns are in the midst of a review of the club's football department, with speculation McKenna is on shaky ground after the club missed the finals for the fourth straight season.

In an interview with Fox Footy ahead of Monday night's Brownlow Medal count, Ablett – who also revealed he was due to meet the club's board next week – threw his full support behind McKenna.

"I think Bluey's (McKenna) done a fantastic job, I really do, developing the boys and just the work he's done around the club, I think he's a great coach and I'd be very surprised if he wasn't there next year," Ablett said.

It has been reported members of Gold Coast's board are unsure whether McKenna has the necessary skills and know-how to lead the club to a premiership.

The club's bold premiership plan, initiated in 2012, stated the Suns' intention of winning a flag before the 2015 expiration date.

But Ablett said McKenna was the right man to lead the club in its pursuit of its first premiership.

"I think so, without a doubt. I think he's a fantastic coach, I think he's done a great job and I couldn't see any reason why he wouldn't be there next year," Ablett said.
