AS THEIR departure date to Dubai closes in, most of Port Adelaide's players would be starting to feel a little nervous about what high performance manager Darren Burgess has in store.

But not Jarman Impey.

The Power are set to fly to the Middle East on December 5 for a training camp that looms an even harsher test than last year.

As a freshly drafted player Impey was spared the worst last season, but isn't expecting any such niceties this time around.

The 19-year-old is preparing himself for the challenge, knowing it could mean the difference between featuring in a finals campaign or watching on from the sidelines.

"Being a first yearer Burgo looked after us, taking us out of a few drills … we probably did about 70 per cent, 75 per cent," Impey told AFL.com.au.

"They reckon it's harder again this year and we won't be pulled out of much at all.

"I'm looking forward to it, it's going to get us really fit of course, and we'll be able to run out those games harder."

It's the potential to build his endurance base that has Impey keen for the pain of Dubai.

Despite exceeding expectations this year, playing 18 games and earning a NAB Rising Star award nomination, he didn't feature in September.

The small defender played just one of the Power's final seven matches, mentally and physically drained by the rigours of professional football.

"Coming off TAC Cup into an AFL program, it really got to me towards the end mentally and a bit physically," he said.

"I was struggling to get myself up for games and running them out.

"It was definitely hard [to not be a part of finals] but you've got to put your best team forward.

"My engine's the main thing, I just need to work even harder over the pre-season."

Impey's performances this year suggest a position deep in defence is his to lose.

His speed and courage to run with the ball was a highlight, leading all AFL first-year players for running bounces.

But rather than considering a place in the team his, Impey said he was approaching season 2015 like a fresh start and would take each week on its merits.

"I just try to do the best I can each week and try and get my spot," he said.

"I've done 2014 and the year was great, but it's time to step it up and give it my best again."
