WEST Coast midfielder Luke Shuey says umpires are doing a good job protecting players from serious head injuries.

Players such as Shuey and the Selwood brothers have copped criticism for their knack of drawing free kicks by shrugging their arms in a tackle and being collected high.

Shuey says the umpires are correct in paying a free kick for such instances.

"Ever since I was a kid, I've learnt that when you get the ball, you stay low (because) you're harder to tackle," Shuey said.

"Most midfielders probably get taught that growing up. I think the way the game's played these days, you really have to look after players."
