HAWTHORN has notified its army of members of potential risks following a possible security breach of personal information.

In an email released to fans on Friday afternoon, the Hawks alerted a portion of its current 60,295 members that a staff member's computer containing member details had been stolen.

The Hawks have since alerted the incident to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).

"The computer, which is password protected, housed a spreadsheet containing member data," the email from consumer business boss Jeremy Millard stated.

"The data within the spreadsheet is not sensitive information and includes no financial details.

"The personal information in the spreadsheet consists of: name, member ID, street address, contact phone numbers, email address and date of birth.

"It is important to stress that no financial information, credit card details or other personal details were included in the spreadsheet."

The Hawks suggested concerned fans could employ a number of measures including enabling multi-factor authentication well as be aware of potential phishing emails and phone calls seeking personal details.

The Hawthorn Football Club has been contacted for comment.
