COLLINGWOOD forward Jamie Elliott has been ruled out of the clash with St Kilda at the MCG on Saturday with yet another hamstring issue.

The injury-plagued star, who has suffered a litany of hamstring problems in recent times, has suffered what the Pies believe to be only a minor ailment.

The club refuses to take any risks with Elliott, insisting that the 26-year-old will sit out the game against the Saints as a precautionary measure.

The livewire goalsneak played 76 per cent of game time – his usual quota – in the win over Carlton at the MCG on Saturday but finished the game in some discomfort.

"Late in the game (against Carlton he had) some hamstring awareness, hamstring tightness, which given Jamie's history we're not going to take any chances there, so we'll pull him out of selection availability this week (and) rehab it," Collingwood football manager Geoff Walsh told the club website on Tuesday.

"It's not a serious thing in terms of what Jamie's been through but, given his history, we'll treat that very precautionary and just see how he goes in the next week or so."

Some weeks ago Pies coach Nathan Buckley raised the possibility of strategically resting players such as Elliott and Darcy Moore, both of whom missed the Pies' run to last year's Grand Final after being struck down with hamstring issues.

In November the star duo travelled with club doctor Ruben Branson to Germany to seek answers from world-renowned hamstring injury specialist Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt.

Moore has played in all eight rounds and Elliott has played seven games and tallied 12 goals – third at Collingwood – despite being held goalless for the first time this season against the Blues.

In other Collingwood injury news, midfielder Chris Mayne has recovered well from a head knock but will need to pass a fitness test, while star onballer Dayne Beams (hip) and defender James Aish (concussion) are likely to be available.

Big man Mason Cox (ankle) will also be assessed but appears less likely to return.
