HAWTHORN has registered its interest in Adelaide midfielder Hugh Greenwood, who remains out of contract as the end of the home and away season draws nearer.

Greenwood has been in discussions with the Crows on a new deal throughout the year.

However, his security in the club's midfield has been a sticking point since he was dropped after round 11 before winning a late reprieve against Greater Western Sydney.

AFL.com.au understands the Hawks are among a number of clubs who are tracking the 27-year-old as negotiations go on with the Crows.

Greenwood missed the opening month of the season, but has played every game for the Crows since round five, averaging 17 disposals and a goal in the past three weeks.

The Hawks are in for another interesting off-season, having last year acquired Chad Wingard and Tom Scully.

They are in the market for out-of-contract Greater Western Sydney gun Stephen Coniglio, who remains unsigned for next year and has clubs circling in Victoria.

The Hawks have also been linked to injured Giants forward Jonathon Patton.

Clubs believe Patton was up for grabs during last year's NAB AFL Trade Period as the Giants looked to make salary cap space, however none were prepared to take on the key forward after he underwent his third knee reconstruction during the season.

He is contracted at the Giants until the end of next year, and is estimated as being on a salary in the $500-600,000 range in 2020.

The Hawks have a number of their own players also out of contract, with decisions to be made on veterans Grant Birchall, Shaun Burgoyne, James Frawley and Paul Puopolo, while former Crow Ricky Henderson remains unsigned despite a career-best season.

The club also looks set to hold its earliest pick at the NAB AFL Draft since 2006, when it selected Mitch Thorp with pick No.6.

Hawthorn currently holds pick No.6 for this year's intake, and will also have first access to father-son prospect Finn Maginness, the son of two-time premiership player Scott.

Maginness has pushed into top-20 contention after a strong season at under-18 level, including starring in Vic Metro's final game of the carnival.
