NORTH Melbourne is set to reward Jy Simpkin for his improvement this year with an early two-year contract extension.

FULL FIXTURE Every round, every game

The first-round pick has had an impressive third season at AFL level, playing 19 games for the Roos.

Simpkin wasn't due to come out of contract until the end of next year, but AFL.com.au understands a new deal will take him through to the end of 2022.

The Murray Bushrangers product, who was pick No.12 at the 2016 NAB AFL Draft, played every game for the Roos last year but has stepped up in his impact this season.

That included a career-best fortnight in the middle of the year, when he picked up 30 disposals against Collingwood in round 15.

The 21-year-old backed that up with 36 disposals and a goal against St Kilda the following week in North's consecutive wins.

The 54-gamer is a key part of the club's future, and has added a tough and hard element to the Kangaroos' midfield.

His rise came after he was dropped ahead of round six earlier this year, but the Roo has bounced back to be one of the club's most improved players in 2019.

He is one of a number of young North players who have shown exciting signs in their season, including Nick Larkey, Cameron Zurhaar, Bailey Scott and Luke Davies-Uniacke.
