Saints coach Alan Richardson says the club still has "a bit to do" in assessing the merits of up to five candidates before it arrives at a decision.
However, Richardson confirmed the Saints would select the player they deem the best available, regardless of the position he plays.
Most experts believe that player is Eastern Ranges power midfielder Christian Petracca, profiled this week on AFL.com.au.
On the hype surrounding Petracca, Richardson told SEN on Friday night: "He's a good kid, but there's three or four along with him."

Geelong Falcons key forward Paddy McCartin is also regarded as a strong chance, and Richardson revealed others in consideration include the Calder Cannons' 203-centimetre ruckman/forward Peter Wright and Sandringham Dragons midfielder Angus Brayshaw.

"Last night I was in someone's loungeroom just having a chat with (recruiting manager) Tony Elshaug and (list manager) Ameet Bains," Richardson said. "Yesterday lunchtime I was having a chat to another young player. There's some real quality there.
"Obviously there's a fair bit of talk about McCartin and Petracca, Brayshaw, Wright. There's some really good players."
During the NAB AFL Trade Period the Saints rejected several offers from rival clubs for the No. 1 pick.
